From the pages of history: Ustka as a health resort. The birth of a seaside resort

| History

If we ask summer visitors what they value Ustka most for, they will probably hear about the beautiful beaches, fresh sea breeze and unique climate. However, not everyone knows that this place has also served as a health resort for nearly 200 years. What's more, Ustka's history as a resort dates back to the 19th century, when the first baths attracted wealthy burghers and nobility from Slupsk. In the decades that followed, sanatoriums were established, the infrastructure developed, and the town became a permanent fixture on the map of Polish spas. Today, Ustka combines the tradition of healing with a modern offer of wellness and recreation. What did the road from a small fishing village to a real health resort look like? Let's go back in time.

How did Ustka become a bathing resort on the Baltic Sea?

The history of Ustka as a health resort dates back to the 19th century. As early as 1832, the presence of 38 families of summer visitors was recorded, mainly wealthy burghers and nobles from the Slupsk area. In 1844, the Bathing Board (Bad Direktion) was established, which testified to the growing importance of the town as a resort.

A breakthrough moment came in 1870 with the establishment of the Bathing Society, which aimed to raise Ustka's profile as a health resort. It was then that the first beach facilities were built - bathing cabins, jetties, and separate beaches for men and women.

Investment boom after launch of railroad line

The development of Ustka as a health resort followed the opening of a railroad connection to Slupsk in 1878. Convenient transportation contributed to an increase in the number of visitors, which entailed the development of infrastructure. At the turn of the 20th century, the first baths and boarding houses for patients began to be built.

In 1911, the Natural Medicine Institution was opened, which offered treatments such as brine, mud and carbonic acid baths and therapeutic massages, among others. As early as 1905, there were two spa doctors in Ustka, and a 1906 catalog listed recommended therapies, including walks in pine forests (thalassotherapy, phytotherapy) and sea baths.

Ostseebad Stolpmünde - Ustka as an official interwar health resort

In 1922, Ustka was officially named "Ostseebad Stolpmünde," confirming its status as a seaside health resort. During the interwar period, new guesthouses, villas and hotels were built, attracting more and more guests. Tourist guidebooks praised Ustka as a resort free from the scourge of mosquitoes, with clean air and a unique microclimate.

The development of tourist infrastructure was influenced not only by leisure facilities, but also by cultural facilities - there were spa libraries, reading rooms, concert pavilions, and in the summer orchestras from various parts of Germany performed here.

Postwar reconstruction of spa function

After the end of World War II, Ustka came under Polish administration. As early as 1946, the Government Delegation for Coastal Affairs provided the city with credits for cleaning up the beach and green areas. That same year, the sea bathing resort was opened and the natural health care facility resumed operations.

In 1947, Ustka joined the Union of Polish Spas, and a year later the statute of the spa was passed and a climate tax was introduced. However, despite these measures, the spa function stagnated for many years, mainly due to financial and organizational constraints.

The turn of the 1970s - the establishment of sanatoriums and the development of medical treatment

The 1970s brought significant changes. In 1973, the city bathhouse was handed over to the United Polish Health Resorts, which made it possible to open the Spa Treatment Facility. The first sanatoriums were also established at that time. Then, in 1978, the independent State Enterprise "Uzdrowisko Ustka" was established, which significantly expanded the treatment offer. At that time, the Natural Treatment Facility was expanded, offering a wide range of treatments, including inhalation, hydrotherapy, massages and exercise therapy.

Ustka health resort - contemporary treatment offerings

Currently, Ustka is one of 45 official health resorts in Poland. The city meets all the requirements specified in the Law on Spas, having:

  • Natural healing resources - brine waters and mud.
  • Suitable climatic conditions - sea spray, iodine-rich air.
  • Developed hoteland sanatorium facilities
  • Educated medical staff - doctors, physiotherapists and nurses.

Modern spas offer a wide range of therapeutic treatments, including hydrotherapy, salt baths, massages, as well as electrotherapy, cryotherapy and kinesitherapy.
