Ustka's best attractions for spring weekends
Spring is the perfect time to rediscover Ustka. Without the holiday crowds, but already in the sunshine, which warms the golden sand and the promenade. This is the moment when the city awakens to life - cafes put tables outside, and the seaside alleys are again filled with the bustle of strollers. If you are planning a weekend getaway to the Baltic Sea, Ustka has a lot to offer you. Pack your comfortable shoes and camera, because we're taking you on a three-day tour of Ustka's best attractions for spring weekends!
Day 1: Walking through the history and legends of Ustka
On the first day we propose to learn about the history of Ustka and visit places that show its rich heritage. A walk along the promenade will allow you to feel the atmosphere of a seaside resort, a former fishing settlement will reveal to you the secrets of the life of the former inhabitants, and the lighthouse and the mermaid of Ustka will introduce you to the world of seaside legends. This is an excellent opportunity to get to know the atmosphere of the city.
Seaside promenade and Chopin Park - the heart of Ustka
The Usteck Promenade is located along the east coast and has a total length of 1,100 meters. It stretches from the eastern harbor breakwater to the "Solidarity Route," making it the longest promenade at the Polish seaside. The initiator of its construction was the Bathing Society, founded in 1870, which sought to develop Ustka as a resort. The promenade itself was built in 1875, and at that time the first promenade functioned here - a place for walks and meetings of middle-class Berliners and wealthy Poles from the Prussian and Russian annexations. Over the years, numerous catering and hotel establishments began to spring up along the promenade. Worth mentioning is the Columbus Tavern, known for its delicious cuisine featuring fresh fish. The promenade remains one of Ustka's biggest attractions, attracting strollers all year round - even in winter, when the city offers a unique winter relaxation by the sea.
While strolling along the promenade, look out for the Frederic Chopin monument, located in a nearby park. It was unveiled in 1979 during the Days of the Sea celebrations. Another attraction is the bench of Irena Kwiatkowska, commemorating the famous actress for whom Ustka was a special place of relaxation. At the end of the promenade there is also an observation tower, which formerly served as an observation post for the 9th Permanent Artillery Battery.
In front of the main entrance to the seaside promenade, on Zeromski Street, stands an original residential building, the so-called Villa Red, which was the former residence of the Slupsk entrepreneur Conrad Westphal. Its construction dates back to 1866. This date can be seen above the entrance to the former stable, which is located behind the villa. An interesting decoration in the architecture of the stable are the horse heads, which are located on the north side of the building. Do you notice that the horses are smiling?

The Mermaid of Ustka - a mysterious legend
On the eastern breakwater of the Ustka port, on a stone pier, there is a monument to the mermaid. The initiator of the monument's construction was the Local Tourist Organization "Ustka". The project and the casting were co-financed by the Ustka community. The statue of the mermaid was made based on a design by artist Jerzy Michal Rosa. The monument was unveiled in 2010.
Legend of the Mermaid
There is a legend, or rather a story - a fairy tale - associated with the Mermaid of Ustka. It is not a typical legend, passed down from generation to generation. It was created after World War II by Kashubian writer and poet Franciszek Fenikowski. He was probably inspired by Jan Christian Andersen's fairy tale about "The Little Mermaid" written in the first half of the 19th century, in which the mermaid first appears as a positive character. The tale explains the origin of the Ustka coat of arms depicting a mermaid named by the poet "Bryzza Rosowa."
Look at the coat of arms of this city. In it there is a sailing ship and there is a fringe fish in the hands of Bryzgi Rosova - the gift of a Baltic royal as lovely as the morning, who was moved by the tearful cry of the poorest of mouths.
A poor fisherman's widow once lived in Ustka. Her son, in order to help the family, went on a distant fishing voyage. The mother looked longingly for his return, but months passed, and the ship did not return. Finally, out of despair and an excess of shed tears, she began to lose her eyesight. One day the mermaid Bryzga Rosowa became interested in her fate. Every day she threw ashore a fresh salmon, the liver of which was supposed to help the widow regain her sight. After some time, the woman began to see again, and soon she saw a returning ship with her beloved son on board.

Sister mermaids: Ustka, Warsaw and Copenhagen
Another unusual legend is also associated with the mermaid of Ustka. Once upon a time, three mermaid sisters lived in the waters of the Baltic Sea. The eldest of them, tired of her long journey, stopped by the rocky coast of Copenhagen and stayed there, admiring the city. The middle one sailed onward to the Gulf of Gdansk, from where she decided to move up the Vistula River. When she saw Warsaw's Old Town and the Royal Castle, she fell in love with the capital and settled there, becoming its symbol. The youngest mermaid, on the other hand, chose Ustka. She was enchanted by the wide, sandy beaches and the warm waters of the Baltic Sea. Here she found her home, and the residents, grateful for her presence, decided to put her in the city's coat of arms.
Mermaid making wishes come true
Today, the mermaid of Ustka is considered a symbol of good luck. According to local beliefs, in order to ensure good fortune, one should stroke her breasts. However, there is a catch - as the mermaid is part fish, she can grant only one wish.
Lighthouse in Ustka - guardian of the port
The first navigational light in Ustka was lit as early as 1871 - at that time port pilots hoisted a kerosene lamp with a Fresnel lens onto the mast, helping sailors to safely enter the port. In 1892, a new red brick building was erected on the site of the former pilot station, serving as an observation tower. It was not until 1904 that it was transformed into a lighthouse, emitting a white, intermittent light visible from a distance of 33 kilometers. Today the lighthouse is 19.5 meters high, but thanks to its location on a dune its light is 22.5 meters above sea level.
Ghost in a Ustka lighthouse
The lighthouse also hides a legend. Old-time lighthouse keepers told of hearing thuds and prolonged moans in the abandoned rooms at night. According to the legends, these were the ghosts of sailors who died on the shoals of the Ustka coast, or the phantoms of castaways whose ships were deliberately lured to the rocks. In the 1990s, the subject of the allegedly haunted lighthouse aroused considerable interest, until finally - after extensive renovation and replacement of the windows - the mysterious noises quieted down for good....

Former fishing settlement and Captain's Notice
Ustka's old town is a place where history intertwines with the present. Walking along the cobbled streets, you can almost hear the echo of the old conversations of fishermen and sailors. The wooden shutters of the charming houses, the atmospheric courtyards hidden among them and the smell of the sea breeze make it easy to move your thoughts to the times when Ustka was a bustling port settlement.
One such place is John Paul II Square - once the site of St. Nicholas Church, whose foundations are now marked by century-old linden trees. Few know that under the lawn of the square lie the remains of the city's former residents. And it's hard to imagine, seeing bustling groups of tourists relaxing on the benches in the summer. In the past, this was the heart of Ustka, and on nearby Czerwonych Kosynierów Street (former Mittelstrasse) stood the house of Captain Haase - one of the wealthy sailors who settled in the so-called Captain's Alley. Today, several original buildings and replicas of former half-timbered huts still remain here, reminding us of the maritime power of the place.

Day 2: Relax by the sea and visit museums in Ustka
On the second day, we suggest slowing down and enjoying the charms of coastal nature. Beachcombing, walking and visiting interesting museums are ideal ways to enjoy springtime.
Beaches of Ustka - golden sand and the sound of waves
Ustka is a true paradise for lovers of sea recreation. Its wide, sandy beaches are considered one of the most beautiful on the Polish coast. Every year they attract crowds of tourists thirsting for sun, relaxation and sea breeze. However, the beaches in Ustka are not only a summer attraction - in winter they attract amber seekers and those who want to take advantage of the beneficial properties of iodine.
Ustka's bathing areas are divided into two parts, each with its own unique character:
- East Beach - the most popular, lively, with convenient access to the city center. It is here that there is a promenade with cafes, restaurants and numerous attractions. The guarded section of the beach is about half a kilometer long, but the golden sand extends much further.
- West Beach - quieter and more intimate. Thanks to a swinging footbridge opened in recent years, it is now more easily accessible. Wider, less crowded and surrounded by wildlife, it is an ideal place for those looking for quiet and an escape from the hustle and bustle. Continuing toward the forest, you can reach the third pier - an unfinished development from the Third Reich, which today is an intriguing historical curiosity.
Regardless of the season, the beaches of Ustka delight with their charm. In spring and autumn it is an ideal place for long walks along the seashore, collecting shells and amber, and enjoying the sound of the waves and fresh, iodine-saturated air.

Amber Museum - Baltic gold
This is the place where you can learn all about amber, its formation, properties and history. In the museum you will find an impressive collection of inclusions - fossilized insects trapped in resin millions of years ago.
Moving footbridge and Blücher Bunkers
A walk on a moving footbridge leads to the western side of Ustka, where the Blücher Bunkers - remnants of German fortifications from World War II - are located. Today, they can be visited, and interactive exhibitions bring you closer to the life of soldiers at that time.
Day 3: Attractions for kids and sea adventure
The third day is the perfect time for family attractions! Ustka offers plenty of entertainment for the little ones that will provide an unforgettable experience.
Megalandia - a fairy tale world full of magic
This is an amazing amusement park where children can be transported to a world of giants, colorful characters and magical constructions. It's an imagination-expanding place, perfect for a family afternoon.
Rope park - adrenaline and fun
